Read to Succeed Was A Success!
Read to Succeed: Summer of Service at the YMCA
The YMCA answered President Obama’s call for national service by engaging the children in a project to promote literacy in our community. Over 1400 children in 40 YMCA afterschool programs across Orange County logged over 10,000 hours of reading this summer. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this project a success!
The importance of Literacy… Did you know?
- Children who have not developed basic literacy skills by the time they enter school are 3-4 times more likely to drop out in later years.
- 33% of children in California will not finish high school.
- 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year.
Service Learning projects offer youth an opportunity to learn about important issues, take action, and make a difference in the world around them.
