Santa Ana YMCA
HISTORY OF THE YMCA IN SANTA ANA

1887 24 Active Members started a YMCA in Santa Ana.
1900 YMCA had 100 pools nationwide.
1920 The YMCA in Santa Ana served as the central YMCA for Fullerton, Anaheim, and Orange, who at that time, each had their own organizations.
1922 A building fund was set up for the Santa Ana YMCA.
1924 Santa Ana YMCA education director Ralph Smedley created Toastmasters as a YMCA Program.
1924 Opening ceremonies were held for the new Santa Ana YMCA.  The new building cost $309,000 and included an 84-room dorm, a gym, pool, and meeting rooms.
1952 The Santa Ana facility was renovated.
1967 The YMCA created and trademarked the YMCA logo with the red triangle.
1972 The YMCA of Orange County was officially formed including all Orange County YMCAs except Anaheim, Orange, Orange Coast (Newport Beach/Costa Mesa), Fullerton (NOC) and Yorba Linda/Placentia (YLP).
1980 The YMCA celebrated its 125th Anniversary!
1992 The Santa Ana facility officially closed.
1994 The YMCA movement defined 4 core character values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
1994 Orange County YMCAs added “fairness” and “citizenship” to the 4 core character values to become the 6 pillars of character used in the Character Counts Program.
1997 The YMCA formally adopted one logo and theme: “We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.”  YMCA also launched their first national public service TV advertising campaign.
1999 US YMCA membership reached 17.5 million with half being female and half being under the age of 18.
2001 The YMCA of the USA celebrated its 150th Anniversary!
2004 A fifth full facility is being planned for Armstrong Ranch in Santa Ana, with land donated by the Segerstroms.

Today The YMCA received the $4 Million from the Van Cleve Foundation Trust, bringing total funds raised for New Santa Ana YMCA to nearly $10 Million.
