Y News Two more YMCA Afterschool Programs achieve national accreditation!

National Accreditation

The West County Family YMCA is currently accepting registrations for licensed after school programs on elementary school campuses. Enroll Today!

Congratulations to Peterson YMCA and Smith YMCA of Huntington Beach on achieving the distinguished honor of becoming nationally accredited by the National Afterschool Association (NAA). Under the direction of Tomia Hicks (Director-Peterson YMCA) and Penny Andrews (Director-Smith YMCA), these two programs have demonstrated through their commitment to providing the highest level of quality of after school programming. The accreditation process takes up to one year to complete and requires staff, parents and children to work together to meet the 144 standards included in the NAA Standards for Quality School-Age Care. Examples include meeting developmentally different needs of children, involving children in program planning, providing positive interactions between children and adults and ensuring a safe and enriching environment for children. NAA President and CEO, Judy Nee explains, "Accreditation is the hallmark of program quality. NAA has been promoting quality since its inception in 1987, and the accreditation process (launched in 1998) gives programs a way to show, in measurable terms, they are a cut above the rest."

Peterson & Smith YMCA join three other YMCA Afterschool Programs - San Juan YMCA (San Juan Capistrano), Wood Canyon YMCA (Aliso Viejo YMCA), and Moffett YMCA (Huntington Beach) – in being the only accredited programs in Orange County! Find your local YMCA Afterschool Program
