Change for Haiti Summer of Service Project

Change 4 Haiti - YMCA of Orange County YMCA of Orange County Afterschool Programs are joining the national effort to raise funds for Haiti. This Summer of Service Project will support the YMCA World Service Effort to raise money to rebuild the YMCA in Haiti. The Haiti YMCA continues to provide support for those impacted by the disaster with a particular focus on the health and well-being of children and youth. An international coalition of YMCAs is working with the Haiti YMCA on the development of long-term recovery and rebuilding strategies to support the communities devastated by the recent disaster.

The children and staff in the programs will be participating in a service project to support this international effort.

Service learning and character development activities are an integral part of our afterschool curriculum. Service learning provides a holistic learning and community engagement experience and supports the development of substantive knowledge, critical thinking and leadership skills, positive character traits, and community involvement. This service project will coincide with Summer of Service, connecting the youth in our programs with millions of other youth in over 100 countries in this global youth service movement. Youth will engage in a comprehensive service learning project with four main components: preparation, action, reflection, and celebration:

Preparation: Youth learn about the needs in Haiti and what efforts are being taken locally and nationally to assist
Youth engage in goal setting, planning, and promotion to support fundraising for Haiti
Action: Youth educate and advocate for the cause
Youth collect donations in support of the cause
Reflection: Youth reflect on what they have learned and gained in their experience with the project through written reflections, discussions, journals or video documentaries
Celebration: Youth share and celebrate their accomplishments and what they have learned with pictures, reports, and media releases.
