With the rising incidence of obesity found in the children of the United
States, especially those of Orange County, the need arose for the intervention
of a program to address this epidemic. Through a PEP (Physical Education
Program) grant from the United States Department of Education, the YMCA of
Orange County
is implementing
the evidence-based CATCH Physical Education Program. Through this program,
the YMCA's goal is to increase the percent of students in Orange County
who actively participate in physical activities and make progress towards
meeting California PE standards. The Fitness Counts program has targeted
32 different schools in Santa Ana and Fullerton. Each targeted school will
receive training (for teachers), PE equipment, and support from YMCA staff.
Beyond implementation of the CATCH program, the Fitness Counts project
strives to create awareness of the importance of physical activity through
seminars, collaboration with like minded organizations, and the creation
of Fitness Councils at each targeted school
"Fitness Counts" Project Mission
