Dave is an Adventure Guides Dad from the Huntington Beach Family YMCA
I have been in the Adventure Guide’s program for 7 years now, and I have had more fun with my daughters than I could ever describe in a dozen years. My older daughter, Tyra, is 12 now, and I still remember our first camp out at Fiesta Island. During a 48 hour period, she experienced her first camping trip, first time fishing, first time on a pontoon boat and first time on an ocean kayak. She wouldn’t leave my side the entire weekend and was so shy and introverted, she wouldn’t even come up on stage to get her first time camper feather. Now she is leading the entire Expedition on stage at events, handing out awards to other first time campers and demonstrating great leadership principals that I hope will guide her throughout her life.
My younger daughter, Alexandra, is 9 and I get to experience the fun all over again with her. Whether it is having snowball fights in Big Bear, snorkeling with fish at Catalina, riding paddleboards at Fiesta Island, or just rock climbing, teaching her archery or making a ceramic decorated plate for Mother’s Day, I get to spend a great amount of quality time with her doing a ton of fun events that I would not be able to orchestrate on my own. Adventure Guides gives me the ability to participate in a bunch of great events that I would not normally be able to initiate. The fact that I have a close group of 200 other dads that share the work makes it so much easier to make these great events so much fun.
I have a much stronger bond with my daughters, thanks to Adventure Guides. We have done so many fun things together and created memories that will last a lifetime. My hope is that my daughters will be able to have daughters and husbands that will be in the program and keep the fun and memories lasting for future generations. I am so happy I found out about this program with the Y. I wouldn’t miss a moment of any bit of the program for anything in the world.
