Dianne Miley and her son Liam are volunteers at the Peterson YMCA, nominated by Christy Trujillio. This is their story.
Dianne’s Story: The director and staff at our Y do something rare and wonderful: they make kids really want to do the right thing. At our Y, demonstrating good character is cool, and volunteering is a privilege. My son absorbed these values like a sponge and, in turn, led me to want to volunteer too. Volunteering with the Y has had many positive impacts on my life: 1. It has given me constructive, enjoyable, memory-making activities to share with my son, 2. It has made me feel more connected to the Y, my son’s school and our community, and 3. It has taught my family and me that everyone can make a difference. I don’t have any special skills and am not a born leader. I just show up and participate, with the intention of helping if I can. It has been wonderful to discover that that is enough! Now, in addition to volunteering at the Y, I am a committee head on the board of a local children’s theater group. My middle school daughter, perhaps inspired by her brother and me, is now looking for volunteer opportunities herself. And my son and I are looking forward to helping the Y exceed its fundraising goals during the 2015 campaign!
Christy’s Story: Dianne Miley is a loving, committed, supportive Parent Advisory Council Member at Peterson YMCA. She has been a very active volunteer for 2 years. Dianne played a huge part in our Campaign Drive last year. We rolled out a test website called Team Raiser to spread awareness of our Cause and Campaign. She worked with her son Liam Miley to compose the most successful Team Raiser paige raising over $500.00. Dianne attends PAC meetings monthly, providing regular meaningful parent feedback and suggestions for programming, events, and service learning projects. She is a great example to her son who is my most involved child volunteer at our site.
Liam is in 2nd grade and he attends every Leader in Training Meeting he can, he is always asking what he can do for Kids in Charge of their Community, he now attends PAC meetings with the Adults, and he actively participates in all we do at Peterson Y. He planned and run our Family Bon Fire, the Parents Night Out Halloween Spooktacular Haunted House, Stockings for the Troops, and he is currently planning and coming up with new ideas for Campaign 2015. Dianne’s involvement in volunteering sparked her son to volunteer at a very high level and a very young age. It is so impressive. She is an amazing supportive volunteer and I thank her for all she does!
