Oakview Community Center Program
Welcomes New Director!

Oakview Community CenterThe West County Family YMCA has hired Jesse Maldonado as a new Coordinator for the Recreation Program at the Oak View Community Center. Jesse has been working for the YMCA for over a year as a sports assistant. He is the younger brother of Jose Maldonado, who is also a Coordinator at Oak View. Jose has recently taken a coaching job at Liberty Christian and Jesse has stepped up in his absence. When the basketball season is over, the brothers will share the responsibility as Co-Coordinators at Oak View.

The Maldonados grew up in the Oak View community and have seen many ups and downs in the community. Both worked for the city before the city handed the responsibility off to the YMCA. When the YMCA took over, they came highly recommended by the city and were hired to continue running the center. They have since moved to Garden Grove, but still have a passion for making a difference in the community they grew up in.

As a new coordinator, Jesse wants to grow the program at Oak View. He sees a lot of potential for the center and will look to organize more leagues and structured sports programs to supplement their daily drop-in recreation program. Despite attending college, and working a second job, Jesse is truly dedicated to serving at Oak View.

Dan Hazard, Board Chair"It Was a Very Good Year"

Notes from the Board Chair
The West County Family YMCA board set a number of goals: to increase our board membership, to improve our visibility in the community and to increase the financial assistance we provide through our fund raising from board members, individuals and businesses. To these ends, we continue to make substantial progress and as Frank Sinatra, the old crooner, sang in one his classic songs. ‘It was a very good year’!

The life blood of all boards is its members. I am pleased to report that not only did our board grow from 17 to 29 members but there continues to be a greater sense of commitment and dedication of the board to the Y’s mission and programs.

The WCF YMCA held its second annual Community Leaders event at the library in November. Our keynote speaker, School board member Celia Jaffee, spoke passionately of her family’s lifetime involvement in the Y and her late father’s role as national President of the YMCA of the USA.

The board embarked on a program to bring its members to see, first hand, our four core programs: School sports, Youth in government, Child care and Y Guides+Princesses. So far, we have visited the Oakview site where we support after school sports and attended the annual Youth in Government bill presentation day at the Huntington Beach City Hall. In 2007, we will visit on-site Child care and a Y Guides and Princess event.

The YMCA is dedicated to improving the lives of our youth on many fronts, including promoting healthy life styles. Last year our local Y had the largest turnout of any Orange County YMCA for the annual Healthy Kids Day. We held the event at Edison High school with over 500 people attending.

They Y boards role is to advise and support the branch; it is the Y staff that must do the work and keep the Y members satisfied. We are extremely pleased with the able leadership of our executive director, Janie Wolicki, and her dedicated and hardworking staff.

The Y continues to seek appropriate partnerships with other community organizations. If you have an idea, please call us!

I have enjoyed my experience as a Y board Chair and now turn the reins over to Del Hovden, who has served us well as a fellow executive board member.

West County Family YMCA is on the Move!.

Beginning April 1, West County Family YMCA will have a new home! Our new location will be 19891 Beach Blvd, Suite #17. The office is located on the Garden Level. We are excited to be moving into the same building as the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce. The building is known as “The Cornerstone Building,” and is located just south of Utica on Beach Blvd., on the west side of the street. The entry into the parking lot is directly across the street from Newland House. We hope you will stop by to see us soon!

We are also pleased to announce that Del Hovden has been elected to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Managers. Del has a long history with the YMCA, with his daughters Brittany and Alexis, through the YPrincesses program.

Del brings tremendous enthusiasm and business acumen to the position. We are very pleased to have Del as our new chairman. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dan Hazard for his service as Board Chair for 2006. Dan did an amazing job as Chairman, and will continue his work as a part of the Executive Committee of the Board of Managers. Dan’s dedication, persistence and true commitment to the programs of the YMCA had a marked impact. Thank you, Dan!

If you would like additional information on any programs we currently offer, or would like to see additional programs, let us know! Please call us at 714-847-9622. We would love your input!

YMCA Childcare Kids Make Seniors Holiday Bright!
YMCA Childcare KidsOn December 19, children from the Hawes YMCA Childcare site visited the Sunrise Senior Living from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. They sang several Christmas carols to the Seniors. The kids finger-knitted scarves for each of the residents, and presented them as gifts during the visit. All the seniors loved the gifts that they received. The kids and seniors enjoyed refreshments together after the song fest. This is an example of one of the many service learning projects that YMCA families were involved in this holiday season.

We’re so glad to have such generous families involved in our program!
