Building
Small Communities in the YMCA
“ With a majority of my focus geared towards
the kids on the playing field, I tend to sometimes overlook how
and if the parents are having fun with their peers. I have one
example of our members building strong kids, strong families
and strong communities.
Since my very first season I have been
working with a group of moms who knew nothing of each other, and
now 9 months later, have
become the best of friends. They spend weekends together,
celebrate holidays together and quite frequently host each others
families for dinner or as they like to call it, ‘pasta
nights.’ Every season since my arrival, I can
always count on them to form a team, and every season they have
been so enjoyable to be around. Most recently they have
begun meeting on weekend mornings to run….just another
way to incorporate a healthy lifestyle, and quality time with
friends.
It is these women who truly exemplify the mission
of the YMCA of OC.” By Edgar Anzaldo, Sports Director

Why Support Your Y?
West County Family YMCA serves over 5000
families in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. You’re
probably familiar with our wonderful After School Aged
Childcare Programs, YGuides and Princesses and Sports Programs. But
did you know that our YMCA provides much needed programs
to communities in need at no cost? We
also provide financial assistance to any families who could
not otherwise afford to participate in our programs. Continue... |
Y-Guides & Princesses
December was full of jolly fun for Y-Guides and
Princesses! The Great Pacific Nation plied with Santa at
the Westminster Ice Palace for their annual ice skating party,
and the princesses were happy to hold daddy’s hand to keep
their little fingers toasty! The Great Hunting Valley Nation
partied down at the Huntington Beach Senior Center, where they
were able to collect many toys for Toys for Tots and many dollars
for Christmas gifts to give to military families in need. The
Pacific Eagle and Great Coastal Nations joined the Trailblazers
at the Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild game, where the blimp
flew overhead and the Ducks mascot paid a visit to our stands. Unfortunately,
the Ducks didn’t do to well, but we still had awesome time! Make
way for the New Year as we head up the mountains for winter camps
at Big Bear and rev up our engines at the 2008 pinewood derbies. And
don’t forget to welcome Miss Taina Hyvren as our new YGP
program director. Noonway Taina!

YMCA Testimonial
When we started the YMCA four
years ago we loved the staff and wonderful sports they
had to offer. Soccer was a wonderful experience for
both of our boys and when mom was assistant coach it
made it even better! T-ball was a great introduction
to team work and eye had coordination. Our kids
loved playing the games especially cooking night, the
Bad News Bears. Then there is Indian Guides that
is a wonderful dad son experience. Tighter they
share wonderful Catalina trips, Boomers, waling in the
4th of July parade and just being together with other
dads and sons. Continue...

Your Board
Dear Friends:
2008, what will it mean for YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR
COMMUNITY? When you look back on 2007, do you see a lot
of the great things that YOUR Y has done here in our community?
Our Bike for Kids campaign netted over 105 bikes from our
community that we were able to lube, polish and then
give (with bike helmets and locks) to very needy kids in
our community.
Our many volunteers were also out in force
raising over $100,000 during our Partner With Youth campaign.
This is the most we have raising in many years so I am
happy to say that we are on track to do many great things
in the financial arena. This is because of YOU and for
YOU and YOUR COMMUNITY. Continue... |
