Sports News!
Our YMCA noontime sports program is an organized
sports and games program emphasizing skill and character development. Noon-
time sports are designed to meet the physical education needs of
elementary school students during their lunch periods. Noon-time
sports are held at Dwyer and Sowers Middle Schools, and the following
elementary schools: Smith, Moffett, Perry, Eader, Hawes, Peterson,
Seacliff and Oak View. This program is offered, free of charge, to
the participating schools. It is made possible due to the generosity
of the Therese Plunkett Foundation.
After school sports concentrates on skill development,
application, and play. Basketball, Soccer, and Flag Football
are very high in skill development while applying learned skills
in game play. Through the program we encourage students to gain
self-esteem, develop socially, physically and enhance their decision-making
abilities. There is more opportunity for game play as opposed to
skill instruction. This program is offered at various schools
in Huntington Beach.
Over 100 families joined the Itty Bitty Soccer program
this fall! Itty Bitty Sports focuses on learning the basics of
the game, teamwork and skill development. It is non-competitive
in nature, and serves youth ages 3-5.
Jr. Lakers
Our YMCA Jr. Lakers program is in full swing and the kids and parents
are having a great time. Once a week our Jr. Laker families
pack the HB City Gym and are treated to some fun and entertaining
games put forth by our little athletes aged 3-8 years old. The
kids have been treated to some quality instruction and coaching,
due in large part to our experienced volunteer coaches. It
has been a promising start to the season with the remaining schedule
set to be a exhilarating and memorable experience for all.
