The Holiday Season Becomes a Little Brighter for
Over 200 Foster Youth
YMCA
Community Services held its annual Christmas FunDay this year
at the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church, with 63 foster and
adopted youth in attendance and over 100 volunteers. Each child
was matched with one volunteer for the day, and experienced
fun activities including arts and crafts, a magic show, karaoke,
games, and a visit from the Orange County Fire Authority. To
top off the day, Santa and Mrs. Clause gave each child a gift
from their wish list. A very special thank you to InSight Health
for sponsoring every child in attendance, and Snyder Langston
for a donation of over 20 brand new bikes! The dedication of
the Y-Mentoring staff, and a huge troop of volunteers ensured
the smiles on every kid’s face.
Additionally, this week, we distributed gifts to an additional
150 Orange County foster children out of our YCS office in
Santa Ana, thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Y-Guide Program
- Northpark Navajo Utes and Y-Princess Program - Shawnee Tribe,
(associated with the Broken Lance North Nation). Continue...
Meet A Board
Member
Hello,
my name is Charles Hewlett and I have been an active Board
Member since 2004. Throughout these past four years,
I have become educated and invested in the programs and
services that YCS has to offer the at-risk children and
families in Orange County. Before joining this Board,
I had no idea that programs such as these even existed.
I will never forget one of my very first “hands-on” experiences
with YMCA members. A few years ago, I was still learning
the ropes and was invited to a New Horizons event, a program
offering social experiences for adults with developmental
disabilities. Continue... |
A Note From Our
Executive Director
This
holiday season, I would like to take a moment and thank
all those who have made a profound impact on the children
and families of our community: our dedicated YCS volunteers. Through
our programs and services, we brought hope and opportunity
to thousands of children and adults in need in 2007. Because
of the continued commitment of our volunteers – board
members, tutors, mentors, foster-care FunDay volunteers,
New Horizons volunteers, Reach Out Awards committee members – we
are able to brighten the lives of more and more individuals
each year. Thank You! Continue...

Volunteer Star: Nancy Ludt
When
I walked into the Bereaved Parent Support Group in 1977,
I had no idea how this would change my life nor the involvement
that I would commit to for the next 3 decades. Our
11-year-old son had died in a sea accident four months
earlier, a heart wrenching and devastating experience. We
met together each week with 7 other parents and talked
about our children, their loss and their lives. Continue...
