Meet A Board Member

Hello, my name is Charles Hewlett and I have been an active Board Member since 2004.  Throughout these past four years, I have become educated and invested in the programs and services that YCS has to offer the at-risk children and families in Orange County.  Before joining this Board, I had no idea that programs such as these even existed.

I will never forget one of my very first “hands-on” experiences with YMCA members.  A few years ago, I was still learning the ropes and was invited to a New Horizons event, a program offering social experiences for adults with developmental disabilities.  Not knowing what to expect, I cautiously walked up to greet them and was bombarded with members ecstatic to meet me!  Each one wanted to know my name and who I was.  One particular member asked my birth date and to this day, has not forgotten it.  Seeing their shining smiles immediately resonated with me and has reminded me of what we are working for each and every day.

Our Board of Managers constitutes many diverse professionals from different backgrounds and connections that we can each offer to YCS.  Some offer large financial contributions; others have more time to donate for working with our programs.  However, I have seen one common purpose and that is the ability and desire to make a difference in these children’s lives and future.  As I have gotten older and become a grandparent (I have 5 beautiful grandchildren), I have learned to appreciate the joy of giving back, investment in community service and the spirit of volunteerism.  If you are interested in joining this Board or offering your gifts of time, talent or treasure to YCS, the rewards given back to you will be ten fold!
