Janice’s Story: I got involved with volunteering at the Arroyo Vista YMCA about a year after my daughter started attending the after school program back in 2012. My daughter talked a lot about the exciting activities she participated in and how her friend’s parents would participate. I started volunteering based on my daughter’s request, after the first event I helped with at the Y, I realized volunteering is more than just to make my daughter happy. Instead, it is about being able to give back and help the people in the community and making a difference in the lives of those in need. Being a volunteer has made an impact on my family’s way of seeing the world and we all gain a better appreciation of people around us.
Bubba’s Story: I’m nominating Janice because in my 7 years here at the Y I have never seen someone so willing to help in any way possible. I remember I was doing a Monday Matters with my older kids and I asked them to donate their old books from home. The very next day Janice had given us over 10 brand new books and over 20 older books. She is always eager to participate in what we do as well. She has unfortunately had to change her child to drop-in for the time being, but she has expressed her desire to maintain her involvement in PAC and has asked to be involved in anything else that we are going to be doing. She’s even making us cookies for our annual Christmas Caroling event. I’m very hard pressed to find anyone with a bigger heart, than Janice. She’s amazing!
