LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS COME TOGETHER TO BUILD A NEW Y
Santa Ana YMCA: A Collaboration the Whole Community Can Celebrate
Santa Ana, CA. The YMCA has been engaging the residents of Orange County since the first Y was formed in Santa Ana in the 1880's. Today, the Y begins a new chapter in its history with the opening of the new Aquatics Center and Speed Soccer Complex in Santa Ana. A Grand Opening Community Event will be held on November 20th to celebrate the new Y and the efforts of the many supporters, community leaders, and local organizations that have helped make this dream a reality.1
This new Y truly exemplifies the power of effective community partnerships between local public, nonprofit, and private organizations. The seeds for the new Y in Santa Ana were planted with a generous donation of land from the Segerstrom Family. The Children & Families Commission of Orange County provided the initial funding to support the new facilities and offer continued support for the project. As the contractor, Snyder Langston, a real-estate and construction firm, has also provided invaluable leadership and assistance in the development and construction of the new facilities. The Santa Ana Unified School District has played a pivotal role from the start, supporting the current programs the Y runs in the district and the joint usage Olympic-size pool that will be shared by Segerstrom High School and the Santa Ana Y. These key partnerships, donations large and small, and years of work by volunteers and staff, have all come together to create a new Y the whole community can celebrate.
On November 17th, these community leaders and organizations came together with the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce and city officials for a ribbon cutting ceremony to honor and celebrate the efforts of all the partners, donors, and volunteers that have contributed in countless ways to the development of this new community hub.
The new Y in Santa Ana, now open, features an Aquatics Center with an Olympic-size pool, a lap pool, and a splash pool with play features for kids & families. A Children's Wellness Center is located on site offering programs to combat obesity and support healthy lifestyles for at-risk children. The enclosed arena soccer complex will host both youth and adult soccer leagues, and a variety of sports programs will be offered throughout the year, including t-ball, flag football, and adult basketball. The Santa Ana Y will continue to provide and expand Afterschool Care and Youth Leadership programs offered at local schools in the area, Kid Fit Club Childhood Health Program, and a variety of Community Services programs that support those in need.
The Y makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to participate and make a difference locally. The new Y in Santa Ana is an example of what can be accomplished, even in tough economic times, when local efforts and leaders come together for a cause. As a nonprofit, charitable organization, the Y serves the entire community. Donations support scholarships to ensure that all families, regardless of income, can have a Y experience.
