HEALTHY HAPPY KIDS

YMCA P.E. Program

The YMCA Physical Education (P.E.) Program provides students in grades K-5 with a weekly structured 60-minute physical fitness program that is modeled after the Physical Education Content Standards for California Public Schools and supplements the P.E. curriculum provided by classroom teachers.

Program Overview

As a community leader and advocate for healthy, active lifestyles, the Y can assist you in meeting physical activity requirements for students by providing professional staff and a cost-effective, easy to implement physical education (P.E.) program that will keep kids active and having fun. The YMCA PE Program is modeled after the Physical Educational Content Standards for California Public Schools and provides opportunity for  students to interact with each other, allowing them to strengthen their self-esteem, social skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

The Need For Better Physical Education

The evidence is clear, youth need more outlets for physical activity and sports if we are to reduce the alarming trends regarding activity levels and childhood obesity. Below are just a few of the statistics:

  • Only 26 percent of the state’s 5th grade students achieved the fitness standards in 2015 (California Department of Education, 2015)
  • Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the last 30 years. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015)
  • Overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults and are at risk for a variety of health issues including cardiovascular disease, behavior problems, and diabetes.
  • Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015)

The YMCA PE Program focuses on keeping kids active – which has a number of cognitive and emotional benefits beyond the physical well-being.
