Angie’s Story: Vanessa first came into the YMCA full of questions: what do we do, will we be able to accommodate her child who is on an IEP at school, how much does it cost, and most importantly, do we offer financial assistance? Vanessa had just graduated college and was working full time, making it impossible for her to not have childcare for her son. She was just beginning her career and needed the extra help financially. She applied immediately for our scholarship program and was accepted. The first day Vanessa came to pick up her son from the YMCA, he ran up to her and said “Mommy, can I come back to this place?” Vanessa laughed with relief that she had finally found a place of comfort for her son.
Since becoming a family at Concordia YMCA four months ago, Vanessa has never stopped being involved. She stays to talk with staff, remains updated about our events, and attends every parent meeting. She has brought her son to morning pancake breakfasts, cooked and cut a ham for our family Thanksgiving potluck, and offers her time whenever needed! It is heartwarming to hear her son still to this day, say he doesn’t want to leave yet when she picks up, and see Vanessa smile with confidence.
