Brittany is a member at the Newport-Mesa Family YMCA
I am quite the fickle person. It is actually pretty irritating because I’m unpredictable and am never sure what kind of mood I am going to be in tomorrow, but if there is one thing I do know for sure, it’s that before I do anything I am going to my Y because that is my happy place and sets my mood for the day.
There are the obvious reasons for why someone would want to join a gym; to better your health, lose the baby weight and not dread bikini shopping. The reason why I stay at the Y is not only for all of that, but much more. This is going to sound a little dramatic but the Y has helped me gain my sanity back. Being a stay at home mom to two small children can be pretty mentally and physically exhausting at times. After years of taking care of other people’s needs and putting mine on the back burner I started to forget how important it is to have an outlet for myself.
Since I’ve joined some of the classes at the Y I’ve found an outlet that caters to each and every one of my moods. Through these classes I’ve also met some amazing people whom I now consider my best friends. Not only have I grown a bond with the people who attend this gym but also the people who run it. The moment I walk in that door I get greeted with a warm smile and they know me by name. I then take my girls to the daycare where I know they are not only being treated with nurturing care but they are also learning stuff like they would if they were in preschool. I know I probably sound cheesy right now but I’m just speaking from the heart. There’s a reason why the people who go to the Y don’t leave, it’s not your normal everyday gym – it’s a place that betters your mind, body and soul and if you want to, make friends for life!
