Camp ELK Summer 2017 Programs
Be a friend to all Theater Games
At Camp ELK we highly value connecting with others in meaningful ways. This summer our drama program will be focused on teaching the basics of improv theater while highlighting how and why we should be a friend to all- nature and each other! This program will focus on how to identify and minimize bullying at camp and at school, as well as understand how we can value and appreciate the creatures around us including pets, birds, bugs, and trees!
STEM Nature Games
This program gives campers lots of options! We have created and compiled a variety of fun and engaging nature games based on the concepts of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math. Campers will be having such a blast playing the mini games of their choice; they won’t even realize they are learning!
Teamwork is one of the best skills campers have the opportunity to gain at Camp ELK. By engaging in thought provoking critical thinking puzzles, campers work together to reach a shared goal in fun, engaging ways. These activities are thoroughly debriefed in ways that emphasize the benefits of effective communication, cooperation, and trust.
Archery is consistently rated the favorite activity here at Camp ELK, and this summer we have really stepped up our game. We have purchased all new bows, arrows, and targets created a new field archery range, and have worked hard with our staff to make archery even MORE exciting and engaging! By adding the historical and cultural context of using bows and arrows our campers will gain a deeper understanding of the importance and utility of one of our most enjoyed camp activities!
With brand new telescopes and stargazing binoculars, our stargazing program is going to open campers up to the expanse of the universe in a completely new and engaging way! Through sharing stories about constellations, observing deep-sky objects such as nebulas and star clusters, and viewing the planets in high definition, our campers will get an out of this world hands on experience!
Our pool time is going to be awesome this summer! It’s a great time to hang out with friends, cool off, and this summer we have added a basketball hoop and a pool party to make our adventures at the pool even more rewarding! From synchronized swimming competitions to early morning polar bear swims, our pool time is a favorite of our campers!
Tracks and Scat Detectives
Our campers will assume the role of detectives in understanding what kind of nature we share camp within this exciting program. Using binoculars, field guides, and camera traps, campers will be trained in using heightened senses to observe the world around us in meaningful ways.
Arts & Crafts
This summer at Camp ELK we have a wide variety of arts and crafts available for campers to choose from. Everything from survival bracelets to murals to string art, campers will have an opportunity to create things with their hands while learning about nature, art, and work together.
Music in Nature
Our Music in Nature program will be a hands-on opportunity for campers to understand how sounds in nature have been translated and interpreted into the music we listen to today. After learning the basics of rhythm and percussion, our campers will create the beats for our dance in nature program to dance to in a collaborative blending of the programs!
Dance in Nature
In the Dance in Nature program, campers will be taught dance moves based on the four elements (water, earth, wind, and fire) that can be blended into a cohesive dance routine. Once campers have an understanding of incorporating dance move with nature, they will begin a collaborative session with the Music in Nature program. This will get everyone engaged in a variety of dance and music driven movement!
Campfire is a camp favorite for everyone who is involved! Dancing, singing, stories, and s’mores! At the campfire, everyone is encouraged to be themselves and have fun together! We sing songs about nature, working together, and the fact that we are all Allstars in our own ways!
Polar Bear Plunge
Every week we have a voluntary Polar Bear Plunge in which campers are given the opportunity for an early morning dip in the pool! This is a fun and adventurous way to wake up for the day, and a very memorable part of camp for everyone who takes the plunge together!
At Camp ELK we have a rockwall that provides an excellent opportunity for personal growth, and overcoming obstacles. Campers of all ages are given the opportunity to ‘summit’ the literal and metaphorical wall in their path that stands between them and success!
Gaga Ball is one of Camp ELK’s favorite games of all time! We have to drag campers out of the Gaga ball circle they love it so much! Basically a less aggressive version of dodgeball, Gaga Ball is fun for all ages and all skill levels and is balanced so that everyone has a good time playing!
Our Primitive Skills program highlights the four basic human needs- food, water, air, and shelter; in a way that is applicable and easy to understand. This program will give campers an opportunity to feel more prepared and more comfortable when being in the wilderness, or anywhere outside of their neighborhood. The program will include shelter building, knot tying, and how to remain calm in emergency situations.
At Camp ELK we love nature! Our nature hike is an opportunity for campers to observe the flora and fauna of our local mountains, engage in some fun exercise, and ask any and all questions they have about the natural world. There are some very exciting features on the hike that teach campers about ecology, zoology, geology, and biology. The Nature Hike is a great opportunity to get campers more comfortable and familiar with hiking in nature, regardless of skill level.
Reserved for camper 12 and older, our off-site Mountain Biking program teaches all the basics of mountain bike safety and riding. With both a beginner and an intermediate mountain biking course, campers of all skill levels will enjoy this opportunity to learn more about bike riding off road in a safe and engaging way.
Rags and Leathers
Rags and Leathers is a nationwide YMCA program that focuses on accomplishing individualized goals. An optional activity, Rags and Leathers is a special program that campers can work on year round to continuously better themselves in a way that is meaningful to them.
Camp ELK is reintroducing Fishing this year! This will be an optional program for small groups of campers that would like to learn the basics of fishing at our local lake. Taught by an outdoor specialist, the fishing program gives campers the opportunity to gain an understanding of how humans fit into the food web, how to fish in a sustainable and ethical manner.
