MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Derick’s Story: As the volunteer chaplain with the Laguna Niguel Family YMCA I have the privilege of helping with the CARES team and facilitating a partnership with South Shores Church in Dana Point. In this short season I’ve been greatly encouraged by the Y members who make up the CARES team through their ideas, prayers and desire to bless their fellow members, the staff and the surrounding community. I was overwhelmed at the incredible response to the school supplies and backpacks by both the Y and the church – what an incredible way to jointly show these kids in need that there are people rooting for them to succeed! And again with the Holiday Bags we are seeing an incredible outpouring at both locations of people who want to make someone’s Christmas brighter. What a joy for me to get to witness this generosity firsthand! Whether it is planning a free Christmas party for the community or getting to know the men and women in our Silver Sneakers program through their activities, I love being around and helping at the Y. It’s more than a gym and more than a social club, its a group of people who want to make a difference in the other people they meet and that is an exciting thing to join.
Rich, who nominated Derick: Derick was originally a volunteer with the LN Branch’s CARES program as a volunteer chaplain. He has since done so much for the Y community in a very short time. He participates in and helps to organize Silver Sneakers events, the school supply backpack drive, holiday care bag drive, fraud prevention seminars for seniors and even planned out a community Holiday Party to be held at our location. He has worked to combine the contributions of his congregation and Y staff and volunteers with great success on multiple projects. He is also an active member of the facility and present for different events. He truly understands what living our Y values is all about!
