I have been taking advantage of the great cardio machines and upstairs weight room at the Laguna Niguel YMCA for several years, but have just discovered something even more wonderful and fun — Group Fitness Classes!
A little over a year ago I attended my first Y Barre class with a friend. Of course, I didn’t know what I was doing, and some of the exercises were hard for me, but I liked the format of the class and wanted to stick with it. So, I did.
I have been pretty committed to attending Barre classes several times a week for about 15 months now and can feel the difference in my body. My posture is better, my legs and hips are stronger, my arms and abdominals are more toned, and I just feel more flexible all over. Last year I went to New York City with my 30-something daughter and we walked all over that fabulous city, seeing the sights and having a great time. The physical demands of travel seemed easier for me, including lugging my suitcases up 2 flights of stairs to the apartment we rented in Greenwich Village. I credit Y Barre classes with getting me in shape for the trip.
I have also gotten acquainted with some of the other ladies in Barre classes, and we have a fun time encouraging each other and joking around a bit. Sometimes we get a little silly and chatty and our instructors have to refocus us, but it is all done with good humor and a positive group dynamic.
This girl is hooked. I will be attending Group Fitness Classes at the YMCA for as long as I can. I keep hearing about Zumba, and Body Pump, and Boot Camp. Hmmmmmm . . . . Maybe I should try one of those?
