Service Learning- Locks of Love
Giving Back at the Chaparral YMCA!
Children at the Chaparral YMCA learned the importance of giving back to those less fortunate when their teachers donated to Locks of Love! Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. This service learning project helped the children to understand how fortunate they are to be healthy, and to help those who are not.
Darin S., a first grader at Chaparral, raised the most money for Fill it With $50 during our Annual Campaign, and was the one to help cut Mrs. Laura’s hair for the donation.
Want to get involved with Locks of Love? Here are some guidelines for donating.
- Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
- Hair of at least 10 inches in length is preferred, but shorter hair can be donated as well.
- Layered hair can be divided into multiple ponytails and donated.
- Curly hair must be pulled straight to measure the minimum length of 10 inches.
