Theda and Tamblin Clark Smith Family Foundation Supports Afterschool Scholarships
Thank you Theda and Tamblin Clark Smith Family Foundation for your generous support of our financial aid program for before/afterschool childcare in the Newport/Huntington Beach Area! Your support will give low-income parents peace of mind, knowing that their children have a safe place to learn, grow, and socialize, when they cannot be there themselves.
The YMCA is currently receiving requests from hundreds of local families in the Huntington and Newport Beach areas for YMCA financial aid scholarships. In Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa, we currently serve over 500 kids in our before/afterschool programs located at Eader, Hawes, Moffett, Perry, Peterson, Seacliff, Smith, Davis and Mariners Elementary Schools. Approximately twelve (12%) of the kids who attend in this area are provided scholarships by the YMCA OC.
According to the US Census Bureau, 11% of Orange County residents live below the poverty level, and a much higher percentage of working families are facing hard choices to meet basic needs for shelter, food, and health care. In California 41% of children are without adult supervision after school. While their parents or guardians are cutting back to basics and working long hours, these children are at risk of exposure to crime, drugs, bullying, and social isolation.
Before/afterschool childcare, an ongoing program open to children between the ages of 5 and 12, offers a safe, structured, and fun environment located right on school campuses. Each licensed childcare site operates an array of programs including homework support that boosts academic success; sports that boost physical activity and teamwork skills; arts & culture and science that foster a greater interest in programs often underfunded in public schools; and community service projects that build character. Moreover, we are able to accommodate children with special needs who often cannot get the support they need in private programs.
In 2015 we will provide more than $500,000 in financial aid scholarships for low-income families for our before/afterschool childcare throughout Orange County. Financial aid is funded through generous foundations like the Theda and Tamblin Clark Smith Family Foundation, corporations, and our Annual Campaign.
