Read about our Service Learning Projects

C.A.R.E.S. Backpack Drive: In collaboration with C.A.R.E.S., we collect new backpacks and school supplies to help kids start the school year off right. C.A.R.E.S. is a YMCA program offering Christian Assistance Resources Education & Services to staff, members and communities.

Essentials Drive: collect essential items for homeless infants and toddlers, and help raise awareness to support homeless families.

Coastkeepers Beach Cleanup: in partnership with Orange County Coastkeepers, this service learning project includes educational activities and field excursions where kids will have the opportunity to learn about their local watershed, receive resources to take positive actions for their environment, learn about ocean pollution and make a difference themselves by conducting a beach clean-up.

Stocking for the Troops: The YMCA of Orange County partners with Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise, and Cub Scout Pack 290 to collect as many donations as possible to send to our troops oversea for the Christmas season.

Read about the Director, Dan Sciortino

Hi, my name is Dan Sciortino and I have I have a B.A. in Pastoral Leadership from Vanguard University, a Teaching Credential from National University and am nationally accreditated by the COA. I have worked at the YMCA for 13 years. I enjoy working with children and their families. It has been a pleasure to work at 4 different YMCA’s and see the children grow and succeed. Many of the kids that I have worked with are now in college. I also enjoy coaching and mentoring my staff. To be able to have a strong team of leaders is very important to me. These strong leaders help create the foundation of our YMCA center. Working with kids keep me young and innocent. I love to hear their stories and get caught up in their make believe life styles. I like to play sports, do art, cook, garden and be goofy with them. I love to go to Camp Oakes each year with the kids that I have at my center. The children and families that I work with have helped create the person I am today. I love serving these families.

I love being with my wife Shannon and my daughter Kate. I enjoy running, hiking, swimming, biking, and enjoy the outdoors. I have a passion for cooking and hosting events for my friends and family. I love music and eat lots of sushi. I like to read especially young adult books. TV shows that I like are Duck Dynasty, Swamp People, Whale Wars, CSI, Food Network and anything else that is not reality based. My favorite sports teams are the New York Yankees and the New York Jets.

My philosophy: At the Chaparral YMCA we are a huge fish tank that is mixed with all different types of people that come from different backgrounds and ways of life. But we work together to form one huge strong loving family that impacts the Chaparral Community.

“Our Y hosted the best family night ever! Great food & activities for all ages. My kids don’t ever want to miss any of the fun events.”

“We just moved to Ladera Ranch and started our daughter in April. She did not enjoy her afterschool care in the past and we are so thrilled she is excited to go to the “Y” afterschool now. We are extremely happy that there is assistance with her homework and keeping her learning in the afternoon while her mind is still awake. Thank you so much for helping to make this transition so pleasant!”
