Read about our Service Learning Projects

C.A.R.E.S. Backpack Drive: In collaboration with C.A.R.E.S., we collect new backpacks and school supplies to help kids start the school year off right. C.A.R.E.S. is a YMCA program offering Christian Assistance Resources Education & Services to staff, members and communities.

Essentials Drive: collect essential items for homeless infants and toddlers, and help raise awareness to support homeless families.

Coastkeepers Beach Cleanup: in partnership with Orange County Coastkeepers, this service learning project includes educational activities and field excursions where kids will have the opportunity to learn about their local watershed, receive resources to take positive actions for their environment, learn about ocean pollution and make a difference themselves by conducting a beach clean-up.

Stocking for the Troops: The YMCA of Orange County partners with Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise, Cub Scout Pack 290 and Starbucks stores in the area to collect as many donations as possible to send to our troops oversea for the Christmas season.

Other Service Learning Projects: Easter Basket for the Troops, Elderly Pen Pals, Project Secret Santa.

“I have heard so many amazing things about the K-Plus program through friends and neighbors. We decided to try the program versus having Taylor with a baby sitter after kindergarten. She is able to continue her education there and play with friends. This is huge plus being an only child. I feel really confident that she will adjust better, going into first grade, due to the program. She loves the staff and the program has been great. Thanks YMCA!”

-Gina Chelius, George White YMCA Parent

“My daughter loves clubs on Thursday. She is in a journalism club that makes a Y newsletter. She asks us to pick her up later on that day so she can finish the club. It’s great to see her enjoy writing and collaborating with others. Great program!”

“When I arrive to pick up my daughter from YMCA AfterSchool, she often does not want to leave because she is having such a great time.”

“I wanted to share my experience with the YMCA because the staffs there go above and beyond what I ever expected. The director and staff do an amazing job handling all the children so well, and it’s obvious that it’s more than just a job to them. I genuinely feel like my son matters to them and they truly care to make a difference in these childrens’ lives. Mr. Greg, Miss Vanessa, and Servando always go above and beyond. Servando has done a simply amazing job and has a gift for working with children. It’s obvious he understands the differences and needs of each child, he cares so much about each of these kids. Servando has the ability to work with my son more effectively than almost anyone I have seen. He is creative, motivating, and tries to teach a lesson with almost everything he does. Servando is someone who really takes the time to think and care.

I cannot say enough good things about Servando, I am grateful that he’s in charge and my son is in his care. My family and I always speak highly of the YMCA afterschool program because it is truly the best I’ve ever had my son involved in. I would recommend it to anyone I know! People like these will never be forgotten and have a great impact on my son’s life. They feel like a family!”
