Read about the Director

My name is Juan Castillo and I have been working with children for the last 8 years in after school programs and as a school librarian. I graduated from Vanguard University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and am currently working on a Master’s Degree in Leadership Studies. I love working at the YMCA because of its values – I believe in second chances and that every day is a new day. I am very involved in my local church in Lake Forest, CA and enjoy spending time with my family. I love food, coffee, and long walks. Currently I am learning that I need to slow down and enjoy whatever life may bring.

“Both my children have attended the YMCA since kindergarten. Being a single working mom of two school aged children the YMCA has allowed me to continue working with the confidence of knowing my kids are safe and cared for and have fun.”

“My son loves the Y so much he wanted to go on Thanksgiving! Obviously the center is a joyful place for my kids and the people who work there care very much for the kids.”

“My son started kindergarten this year at age 5 years old. Actually his birthday is August 15 so this makes him one of the youngest in the class. At the beginning if the year he knew the basic he needed to start kindergarten but many other children in his class were a year older and progressing much faster. I spoke with Ms. Mia and Ms. Linda and asked if they w ould help Jakob with his limited knowledge of knowing his sounds and writing of his letters. Both of them agreed Jakob’s initial assessment was good for his age but he would fall behind without help in these areas. Ms. Linda sent extra works heets home to help Jakob excel and spent time focusing on the areas he struggled with. As of today Jakob knows all of his letters and sounds and is reading. He has actually surpassed our expectations and surpassed many of the older scholars in his class in learning his site word lists!! After his 2nd assessment at school Jakob did not require a teacher parent conference because his was excelling above the required coursework in kindergarten! He is ready for first grade. I honestly believe it is because of these two wonderful women who went above and beyond to ensure my child didn’t fall through the cracks and made sure he was ready to move to the next grade in school. I am very grateful!”
