Read about our Service Learning Projects

C.A.R.E.S. Backpack Drive: In collaboration with C.A.R.E.S., we collect new backpacks and school supplies to help kids start the school year off right. C.A.R.E.S. is a YMCA program offering Christian Assistance Resources Education & Services to staff, members and communities.

Essentials Drive: collect essential items for homeless infants and toddlers, and help raise awareness to support homeless families.

Coastkeepers Beach Cleanup: in partnership with Orange County Coastkeepers, this service learning project includes educational activities and field excursions where kids will have the opportunity to learn about their local watershed, receive resources to take positive actions for their environment, learn about ocean pollution and make a difference themselves by conducting a beach clean-up.

Stocking for the Troops: The YMCA of Orange County partners with Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise, Cub Scout Pack 290 and Starbucks stores in the area to collect as many donations as possible to send to our troops oversea for the Christmas season.

Other Service Learning Projects: Easter Basket for the Troops, Elderly Pen Pals, Project Secret Santa.

Read about the Director, Krista Poitras

Hi, my name is Krista Poitras.  I have a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Child and Adolescent Development as well as my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Cal State Fullerton.  I have been pursuing my passion of working with children, and their families, since I was eighteen years old.  I have traveled to China to teach English and American Culture at a Summer Camp, taught Kindergarten and fourth grade, and worked at another afterschool care program before finding my way to the YMCA in 2010.

I have many passions in life; my biggest one is making a difference in the lives of children and their families.  My inspiration for this comes from my older sister who raised her oldest son while working full time and attending UCLA full time.  It was hard to see her and her husband struggle, but she was innovative and persevered through the years.  It is my desire to support children and their families, struggling and non, so they have an opportunity to grow, develop, and thrive; and to help make their lives a little easier.  I feel being the Director of Peterson YMCA is the perfect place for me to accomplish this life goal.

A little about me personally, my husband and I welcomed our first child in September 2015.  I love being a mom and all that it entails.  I’m looking forward to see what the future holds.

Some fun facts about me: I love to travel, go hiking, playing/watching sports, and going to theme parks.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our Peterson YMCA website. If you have any questions about enrolling your child at the Y, please do not hesitate to contact with me using the information below. I look forward to meeting you and your child / children.

“The staff is awesome! The Director, Christy, is very attentive to the needs of the kids and the parents. Any issues I have she resolves them immediately. Her positive, upbeat attitude makes the Y seem like a real family. We have been so happy there this year…my son actually asks to go to the Y. My daughter, who will start in Kindergarten next year, is already ready for the Y because of the friendly greetings she always gets from Christy and the other staff. I feel totally confident that it will be an easy transition for her because of how friendly they have been to her when I take my son”. – Peterson YMCA Parent

“I like that my son seems happy and comfortable at the Y. I have seen many positive changes in him since he started going there. I also really like the positive feelings I have about the staff. The Director is always happy, friendly, and energetic, and she really knows my son. The other staff are always polite, upbeat, and gentle with the kids.” – Peterson YMCA Parent

“I have been very happy with the Peterson YMCA. I especially like the character building activities and the great staff”. – Peterson YMCA Parent

“I love the site is at my son’s school campus. He is treated well and loves to be at the YMCA. I appreciate that he has the opportunity to get his homework started before I pick him up”. – Peterson YMCA Parent

“Our director at Peterson YMCA truly shows the kids how to respect each other, have fun at the center, and learn to work with each other. She is open to many ideas from parents and loves to hear ideas”. – Peterson YMCA Parent

“The YMCA has done an excellent job, I feel that the programs have added to my child’s school experience. I would recommend the Peterson YMCA to anyone.”. – Peterson YMCA Parent

“Our son has grown up so much with the help of the staff, his behavior and social skills have improved so much in just a short time. Thanks for all the positive help and work with our son!” – Peterson YMCA Parent

“There have been times when I dropped off my daughter and it absolutely broke my heart that she knew no one and wanted to come home with me. Fortunately, Miss Gloria has come to my child and gotten her to participate with other children. These kids included my daughter when she was obviously feeling uncomfortable. These are the small gestures that are worth millions to a parent and the reason that my family loves the YMCA.” – Peterson YMCA Parent
