Read about the Director

My name is Juan Martinez and I have been working at the Y going on 5 years now. I have been working with kids since my sophomore year in high school; starting out as a volunteer at my baseball coach’s daycare, working as a Program Director at a Boys’ and Girls’ Club, teaching a Kinder class for 5 years, and spending 13 years as a preschool teacher. I received my childcare units from Orange Coast College and my Degree in Sonography from Newbridge College.

I’ve been married for 13 years and have two amazing boys, John is 12 and Jeremy is 7. I love to spend as much time as possible with my family. We enjoy just about anything to do with the outdoors, especially fishing and hiking in our local lakes and mountains. Every year we like to take a spontaneous family trip. Last year we went to Yellowstone National Park and had a fabulous time making memories that will last a lifetime. My boys are in charge of planning our next spontaneous vacation and I can’t wait to find out what they come up with.

My parents have been my source of inspiration. As a young man, I observed how hard they worked to make sure we had everything and anything my siblings and I wanted or needed. That hard work was instilled in me and I try to apply it to my everyday life. What I like the most about working with children is that I get to help guide, mold, and inspire them to be resourceful and independent people. The best part is having them come back to visit when they have graduated from high school or college and see what they have become, knowing that you had a little part in it.

“The YMCA is a great place for kids to develop a sense of belonging, self-worth, self esteem, and feel contributing and valued. The staff is warm and welcoming and always involved with the kids! Each of the staff members has taken the time to get to know each child on an individual level and pull from their strengths and assist with their weaknesses in a positive way! You can tell they love what they do! My husband and I feel great knowing that our son is in such a wonderful place with such caring people. Their program has helped him grow socially, emotionally, physically, and academically and we truly feel part of their family!”
